A curated ITS database for quick fungus species identification
MIMt-ITS is a new database dedicated to containing complete sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) for all sequenced species whose genome is available in Genbank and/or RefSeq. To complete this database, all the sequences contained in the manually curated Targeted Loci database were added.
The sequences extracted from genomes were obtained by combining both 18S and 28S molecules of ribosomal RNA to extract the portion between them (see Figure).
All sequences contained in MIMt-ITS database represent the fragment located between the molecules 18S rRNA and 28S rRNA containing ITS itself and the 5.8S rRNA in the middle as it is located in the genome.
MIMt-ITS has been compared with the most used ITS database (UNITE) and despite UNITE contains sequences for more species than the represented in MIMt (since that species does not contain a full genome available), MIMt contains sequences for more than 6,700 species not presents in UNITE, so they are complementary.
